"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is ever going to get better, it’s not."
Okay, so I wanted to watch this as soon as I could when I found out there was a fandom over this one movie. So I watched it, expecting to be blown away. It wasn’t bad. It had a good concept, likable characters (I never fell in love with the Once-ler like everyone else did), and some great voice acting, especially from the notable Danny DeVito playing the Lorax, the speaker of the trees. I just wish they would’ve spent more time developing the story rather than glorifying characters that, even though they were likable, are fairly forgettable. If the plot would’ve had more depth, I think I would’ve loved this movie. The animation was flawless, the comedy was a little stale, but with a well-deserved brush up, it would’ve been a solid CGI movie.
As far as empathizing with the fandom, I can honestly say I didn’t understand the big draw-in after I first finished it. After I started looking for gifs for The Lorax, I trudged through part of the fandom and with it, some surprisingly nice depictions of artwork from the fans. It helped me understand why people liked the Once-ler so much, what with his seemingly stark split-personality traits. But that’s as far as I can relate to. Stripping those two personalities away and substituting your favorite kink trait and running away with it like a rabid animal? No. Sorry.
It was definitely worth the watch and for curiosity’s sake. I would recommend it if you’re in the mood for a feel-good movie with a fast-paced plot.
